Questions & Answers

The things knitters ask me most. Don’t see yours? Send me an email.

Patterns

What skill level do I need?

Here’s the secret: you don’t need one. I don’t use skill levels on my patterns or in my workshops. Instead, I list the skills involved. If you know those techniques, or you’re excited to learn them, and you have the desire and the time, you can make anything you want. I mean it!

Where can I buy your patterns?

Most of my patterns are sold as PDF downloads on Ravelry. A few are available only through shops, books, or magazines. When you buy a pattern on Ravelry, it’s saved to your Ravelry library or sent to you as a download. If I ever update a pattern, you’ll be notified, so you’ll always have the most current version!

I think I found a mistake in a pattern.

Mistakes can slip through, even after tech editing and test knitting. Check the errata page first, since it may already be corrected there. If it’s not listed, email me the pattern name, the row or section, and what you found, and I’ll take a look!

I’m stuck. Can you help?

I’m happy to help! Many common techniques are covered in my free video tutorials. If you’re still stuck, email me the pattern name, the size you’re making, and what’s going on, and I’ll do my best to get you untangled.

How do I become a test knitter?

Test knits are announced first in my newsletter and on Instagram, then filled through my testing group on Ravelry. Join the newsletter and follow me on Instagram so you’ll hear when the next one opens. You can also check the Pattern Testing page.

Techniques

What are locked floats?

It’s a way of working stranded colorwork where the unused yarn (the float) is trapped behind the working stitches, so the floats on the back stay short. I usually trap the float every other stitch, but you can trap it less often, too. The technique is sometimes called Armenian knitting, but other cultures have used it as well, which is why I call it locked floats. The back of your work becomes a smooth, woven fabric that won’t catch on fingers or buttons. Watch the videos.

What knitting style do your videos use?

Most are worked in English (throwing) style, with the working yarn in the right hand. The locked floats videos show two-handed knitting, with a couple in continental style too.

The book

What’s new in the Revised 2nd Edition of Urban Knit Collection?

It includes all 18 original patterns with the errata corrected, plus an expanded section on locked floats.

Can I get a signed copy?

Yes! Signed copies are available through my Etsy shop. Find the link, plus the PDF edition, on the shop page.

Workshops

Where can I take a workshop with you?

Upcoming workshops, retreats, and online events are listed on Workshops & Events. Registration goes through each event.

Would you teach at my shop, guild, or retreat?

I’d love to hear about it. Email me your dates, location, group size, and the kind of workshop you have in mind, and we’ll go from there.

Still have a question?

I read every email, and I’m happy to help.
