Workshop homework

“You Want Me to Do WHAT to My Knitting?!”

An Introduction to Steeks. Snip snip snip! Terrified about cutting up your knitting? You won’t be after this workshop. Get your homework done and come ready to feel empowered.

Steeks homework swatches: a colorwork tube and a flat single-color swatch

Homework

Before the workshop, please knit and block two homework swatches: one colorwork tube worked in the round and one flat, single-color swatch.

For the colorwork tube, choose either Chart A or Chart B. Cast on 80 sts for Chart A or 76 sts for Chart B.

These samples will be used in the workshop for practicing reinforcement, cutting, and finishing techniques. Please do not reinforce or cut any steek columns.

About the workshop

Cutting your knitting may seem like the stuff of nightmares, but in a controlled environment, following a few simple steps, it’s a tool that makes stranded knitting a dream. We’ll face our fears while learning the skills required to steek knitted fabric, and explore the steps to a beautifully finished edge. In the 3-hour version, we’ll also install a zipper by hand.

Bring to the workshop

  • Both homework swatches, blocked
  • Solid-color worsted-weight wool (such as HiKoo Simpliworsted) in the main color of your swatch
  • A second partial ball in a color that complements or contrasts with your swatches
  • Circular needles one size smaller than those used for your homework
  • The usual knitting bag filled with treasures

Please have all yarn wound and ready to use.

Materials fee: $15

Covers supplementary materials provided in the workshop, including scissors, crochet hook, thread, and sewing needle.
